ODMR

On-Demand Mail Relay

What is ODMR?

On-Demand Mail Relay (ODMR), also known as Authenticated TURN (ATRN), is an e-mail service that allows a user to connect to an Internet service provider (ISP), authenticate, and request e-mail using a dynamic IP address from any Internet connection. Simply put, ODMR is Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) using dynamic IP addresses instead of static IP addresses. Once the user requests e-mail, the roles of client and server reverse, and normal SMTP operations occur.

Why ODMR?

Using ODMR is the only reliable way to receive email for sites that use ADSL, as Telkom does not provide fixed IP addresses with their ADSL service.

ODMR gives you ISP and access method independence. You can use any ISP you prefer and any type of Internet access from analogue telephone lines to ADSL.

Can I use ODMR with any mail server?

Practically any mail server will work with ODMR as the protocol used is SMTP. You may need an additional client to authenticate with the ODMR server. For Linux email servers, Fetchmail can be used and for MS Exchange and other Windows based mail servers, XATRN.EXE can be used. Some mail servers, such as Mailtraq, have ODMR support built-in to the server.
